Kjøreseddel — how to apply

To work as a bus driver in Norway, you must hold a "kjøreseddel" (passenger transport permit). Processing time with the police varies from 2–6 weeks, so it's important to start early. You can apply for a kjøreseddel anywhere in the country. Tide is happy to assist you along the way — this is arranged during the interview.

Step by step:

  • Book an appointment with the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) to obtain a D-number (requires an employment contract)

  • Book an appointment with a doctor for a medical certificate (Tide can help)

  • Fill in the self-declaration form and bring it to the doctor

  • Go to the doctor with your D-number and the form

  • Fill in the application for a kjøreseddel to the police

  • Gather the documentation (copy of driving licence, YSK, and passport)

Send the documents to the police. Mark the envelope with:
"Søknad om kjøreseddel, Tide buss" ("Application for kjøreseddel, Tide bus").

Documents required for the application

  • Medical certificate (must be issued in Norway and no more than 3 months old)

  • Copy of your D-number from the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten)

  • Copy of your passport

  • Copy of all pages of your driving licence, including YSK (YKB)

  • Certificate of good conduct covering your place(s) of residence for the past 4 years (Important — it must specify that it is to be used for a bus driver's kjøreseddel)

Pay and working hours

Pay is a natural and important question. We follow the Bus Industry Agreement ("Bussbransjeavtalen"), a nationwide collective agreement between employer and employee organisations. This agreement ensures fair and predictable pay and working conditions for all bus drivers in Norway.

The average salary for bus drivers is approx. NOK 603,000 per year (ref. NHO Transport, 2026). Pay is determined based on qualifications such as a trade certificate, seniority, courses and training modules. In bus driving, there are many types of supplements, such as shift, weekend and evening supplements, as well as overtime.

We can't give an exact salary until we know your background and experience — this will be mapped out during the interview. You can be confident that pay is set in accordance with the applicable agreement. Salary is estimated based on the shifts an employee works, which may include split shifts, different times of day, and weekends and/or public holidays. Overtime pay and supplements follow the Bus Industry Agreement.

Housing

We know that the housing market in Tromsø can be challenging, especially for newcomers. We help you find housing during the start-up phase. Tide covers the rent for the first six months in one of our rooms or apartments. After that, you can choose to stay on and rent the property yourself. Monthly rent then ranges from roughly NOK 8,000 to 11,000, depending on the property. If you're looking for your own place, we can also help with a deposit guarantee, references and practical support in your housing search.
